Gnome Media Player Added To The Official Ubuntu 10.10 Repositories

webupd8: GNOME Media Player supports the VLC, Xine and Gstreamer engines for playing media. It also has the ability to switch between the engines, and an engine auto select mode which automatically selects the best engine for playing a particular type of file.

GNOME Media Player is very new so until now you had to use a PPA to install it in Ubuntu – but that’s not the case in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat as GNOME Media Player has been included in the Official Ubuntu repositories.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome-media-player-development/development && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-media-player

Gnome Media Player requires VLC < 1.1.0.

It’s Official: Valve Releasing Steam, Source Engine For Linux!

Valve Corporation has today rolled out their Steam Mac OS X client to the general public and confirmed something we have been reporting for two years: the Steam content delivery platform and Source Engine are coming to Linux. This news is coming days after we discovered proof in Steam’s Mac OS X Client of Linux support and subsequently found more Linux references and even the unreleased Steam Linux client. The day has finally come and Linux gamers around the world have a reason to rejoice, as this is the biggest news for the Linux gaming community that sees very few tier-one titles.

Those enthusiasts within the Phoronix community even managed to get the unreleased Steam Linux client running up to a partially drawn UI and other modifications, but now that work can stop as Valve is preparing to officially release the Steam Linux client from where they will start to offer Linux native games available for sale. For all those doubting our reports that Source/Steam would be coming to Linux, you can find confirmation in the UK’s Telegraph and other news sites. An announcement from Valve itself is imminent.

Mozilla Plugin Check now checks plugins in all web browsers

The Mozilla developers introduced the Mozilla Plugin Check back in October 2009 as a way to inform users of the Firefox web browser about outdated plugins. Plugins that are not up to date can pose both a security and stability risk.

The plugin check would analyse the plugins of the web browser and compare their version to the latest version offered by the plugin’s developer to inform the user if the plugin is up to date or needs updating.

This plugin check has now been extended by the developers to work with other web browsers as well making it a web tool for everyone who wants to verify that the installed plugins are up to date.

All that needs to be done to check the installed plugins is to visit the plugincheck website to do so.
